Sie ist endlich fertig und ich mag sie nun wirklich sehr, aber was für eine Verwandlung sie durchmachen mußte ... Ihr Name ist Lola.

we had a few days off
We were traveling a few days and stayed in this little house, located in Belgium.
Es ist schon ein kleines bißchen wie Urlaub, auch wenn man nur mal drei Tage irgendwo anders verbringt. Wir machen das bald wieder.
It's very inspiring and a little bit like holiday, even if you spend only three days in foreign parts. We do it again soon.
Aber nun muß ich Euch unbedingt diese beiden Buddha-Köpfe zeigen, die ich in der Einfahrt eines Elektrikers entdeckt habe.
But now I necessarily have to show you these two Buddha heads, that I have discovered in the driveway of an electrician.
Die hätte ich ihm ja so vom Sockel klauen können.
I was thinking about stealing them. They are so beautiful.

some gardeninsights
Ich male dieses Wochenende andere Dinge in meinem Atelier.
I'm painting other things in my studio this weekend.
Ich streiche nämlich gerade dieses Konstruktionsholz.
I'm painting this construction wood.
Wir haben eine Flachdachgarage und um den Rand etwas schöner zu gestalten, bauen wir eine kleine Pergola daran.
We have a garage with a flat roof and to make the top edge a little bit more beautiful, we build a small pergola.
Wahrscheinlich muß von dem Wein dafür leider erst einmal etwas ab. Es ist schade, da ich einen sehr langsam wachsenden Wein habe. Aber eigentlich bin ich ja froh darüber, da ich ihn überhaupt nie schneiden muß.
Probably I have to remove some of the wine, that is growing there. It is a pity, because I have a very slow-growing wine. But actually I'm glad, because I never have to cut him.
Das fertige Werk kann ich Euch leider noch nicht zeigen, da wir noch nicht weiter sind, aber wir haben letztens auch schon dieses kleine Rankgerüst gebaut, das ich Euch noch zeigen möchte.
Unfortunately I can't show you the finished work, because it is not more advanced yet, but we have also built this small trellis recently, that I wanted to show you, too.
Ich muß noch ein paar Drähte dran spannen und dann werden in diesem Jahr dort unsere Bohnen wachsen.
I still have to stretch a few wires to it and then, there will be growing our beans this year.
Und wo ich im Hintergrund gerade diesen Zierapfel blühen sehe, muß ich Euch noch mal mit vors Haus nehmen. Dort habe ich nämlich noch einen Zierapfel wachsen, der mein absoluter Favorit ist.
And where I just see this blooming ornamental apple in the background, I have to take you in front of my house, because there is my absolute favorite ornamental apple tree growing.
Es ist ein "Red Sentinel". Falls Ihr noch auf der Suche nach einem schönen Baum seid: Dieser ist meiner Meinung nach der schönste Zierapfelbaum, den es gibt.
It is a "Red Sentinel". If you are looking for a beautiful tree: There is in my opinion no more beautiful ornamental apple tree, than this one.
Er ist im Frühjahr immer übersät mit diesen wunderschönen Blüten und bekommt dann im Herbst genauso viele schöne kleine rote Äpfel, die bei den Vögeln im Winter sehr beliebt sind.
In spring he is always covered with these beautiful flowers and then in fall, there are as many beautiful little red apples, which are very popular among the birds.

Original-Gemälde "Die, die sich nur an einen erinnert"
Ich brauchte heute doch eine kurze Pause von dem Bild, das ich unbedingt beenden möchte. Ich habe aber stattdessen heute dieses beendet. Es war einfach, denn ich habe es einfach nur noch signiert.
Nevertheless, today I needed a short break from my painting, that I want to finish so badly. But I have finished this girl, instead. It was easy, because I just had to sign it.
Ich weiß nicht mehr wann ich sie gemalt habe. Ich denke es war so Ende letzten Jahres. Aber eigentlich ist das ja auch egal.
I don't remember when I had painted her. I think it was late last year. But actually, that's not important.
Jetzt werde ich sie versiegeln und dann wieder an mein anderes Bild gehen.
Now I will seal her and then I go back to my other painting.
Nevertheless, today I needed a short break from my painting, that I want to finish so badly. But I have finished this girl, instead. It was easy, because I just had to sign it.

How long does it take you, to paint one of your paintings?
Ich habe so viele angefangene Bilder rumstehen. Ich tendiere irgendwie immer mehr dazu, ständig etwas Neues anzufangen und nichts fertig zu machen. Ich habe mir vorgenommen, mal wieder ein angefangenes Bild rauszuholen und es FERTIG zu machen.
Ich habe mich für dieses entschieden.
I have so many paintings standing around here, that aren't finished. Somehow I tend more and more to constantly start something new and don't finish things. I decided to work on an unfinished painting til it's finally DONE.
I have chosen this one.
Ich finde es einfach nur schrecklich und weiss eigentlich gar nicht, was ich mit ihr anfangen soll. Ich habe dieses Bild im September letzten Jahres angefangen und es hat seitdem schon ganz viel durchgemacht.
I think it's awful and I don't know what to do with her. I have started this painting in September last year and it has been through a lot, since then.
Eigentlich fing es ja ganz gut an.
Actually, it has started quite well.
Aber dann ...
But then ...
Schon besser, aber nicht, was ich will.
That's better, but not what I want.
Man hätte es so bestimmt lassen können.
It definitely could have been finished like this.
Aber irgendwie ...
But somehow ...
Nun kämpfe ich schon wieder seit zwei VOLLEN Tagen wieder mit ihr. Aber ich habe mir vorgenommen, sie nicht wieder in die Ecke zu stellen, sondern mich bis zum Ende durchzukämpfen.
Now I am fighting again with her again for the past two FULL days. But I don't want to put her back in the corner again. I'll wade through to the end.
Auf ein neues.

So viel dann dazu "Wie lange brauchst Du für so ein Bild?" Das werde ich des öfteren gefragt. Ich weiß dann immer gar nicht, was ich sagen soll. Am liebsten würde ich sagen: "Jahre", oder "Ein Bild braucht so lange, wie es eben braucht." Das sind aber alles blöde Antworten, oder? Aber was soll ich antworten?
That's my contribution to "How long do you need for a painting?" I'm often asked this question. I then always don't know what to say. I would like to say "Years", or "An painting needs as long as it needs." But these are all stupid answers, right? But what to say?
Viele Leute haben die romantische Vorstellung, dass ich mir etwas ausdenke und das dann innerhalb von ein paar glücklichen Stunden aufs Papier bringe und ein schönes fertiges Bild habe. So ist das in der Regel aber überhaupt nicht. Ein Bild ist für mich harte Arbeit. Ich muß mich durch jedes durchkämpfen und viele Frustrationen unterwegs aushalten. (Und meine Familie muß die auch aushalten, wenn ich aus meinem Atelier komme und mal wieder denke, dass ich gar nicht malen kann, weil ich nach ein paar Stunden Arbeit an einem Bild das Gefühl habe, dass ich nicht ein Stück weiter gekommen bin.)
Many people have the romantic idea, that I think up something and then bring it in a few happy hours onto the paper and have a beautiful finished painting. But that's not the rule for me. An painting is hard work for me. I have to wade through each of them and withstand many frustrations along the way. (And even my family has to endure me, when I come out of my studio and think that I can't paint at all, because I have, after a few hours of work, the feeling, that I haven't come one bit further.)
Ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass es so wäre, wenn ich realistisch malen wollte. Ein Foto abzumalen finde ich viel leichter und entspannter, aber Realismus ist überhaupt nicht mein Ziel. Ich weiß zwar noch nicht was mein Ziel ist, aber Realismus ist es definitiv nicht. Realität haben wir doch alle genug, oder?
Perhaps it would be so, if I wanted to paint realistically. To take a photo and paint it would be much easier and more relaxed for me, but realism is not my goal. I don't know yet what my goal is, but it's definitely not realism. Reality, we have all enough, right?
Vielleicht gibt es auch gar kein Ziel. Vielleicht ist jedes Bild für sich ist ein Ziel, was es zu erreichen gilt. Jedes ein Rätsel, welches zu lösen ist.
Perhaps there is no destination. Perhaps each painting is in itself a destination, which is to be achieved. Each a mystery, that has to be solved.
Ich hoffe, Euch dieses Bild bald fertig zeigen zu können.
