Recycling of an antique book

Ich habe die letzten Tage unter anderem damit verbracht herauszufinden, wie ich einem alten Buch neues Leben einhauchen kann. Ich bin so begeistert von dem Ergebnis. Es ist wirklich cool geworden. Schade, dass ich es Euch nicht in Echt zeigen kann.

Among other things, I have spent the last few days to find out, how I can give an old book a new life. I am so amazed by the result. It has become really cool, I think. Too bad, that I can't show you the real thing.

Aber von vorne. Manchmal suche ich auf dem Flohmarkt nach einem alten Buch mit braunen Seiten und vielleicht altdeutscher Schrift, weil ich diese alten Buchseiten sehr gerne als Collagematerial für meine Bilder benutze. Ich habe zwar selbst genug Bücher, die ich bestimmt nicht noch einmal lesen werde und dafür benutzen könnte, aber antikes Papier ist eben doch anders. Dieses alte Papier übt einen ganz besonderen Reiz aus, wie ich finde.

But from the beginning. Sometimes I look at the flea market for an old book with brown pages and maybe an old German script, because I love to use these old book pages as collage material for my paintings. Although I have even enough books, that I will definitely not read again and could use for this purpose, antique paper is just different. This old paper has just a special charm, I think.
 

Meistens sind die Bücher schon sehr beschädigt und fallen fast auseinander. Aber manchmal sind die Cover auch noch sehr schön, so dass es schon schade ist, dass sie in alten Pappkisten vergammeln. Ich frage mich: Wem mag dieses Buch wohl einmal gehört haben? Wer hat wohl darin gelesen und diese handschriftlichen Notizen gemacht? Was hat es alles erlebt? Soll seine Reise nun in dieser Bananenkiste zu Ende sein, oder wird sie weiter gehen und wohin?

Most of the books are already very damaged and almost fall apart. But sometimes, the cover are also very beautiful, so it's really a pity, that they rot in old cardboard boxes. I wonder: Who owned this book? Who read it and made these handwritten notes? What has it seen? Should his journey be over now in this banana box, or will it go on and where will it go?

Aus diesen Gedanken ist dann bei mir der Wunsch entstanden, alten Büchern neues Leben einzuhauchen. Es ist doch zu schade, dass keiner mehr etwas mit diesen schönen Büchern anfangen kann, denn Lesen möchte sie bestimmt niemand mehr.

From these thoughts I got the desire, to give old books a new life. It's too bad, that no one can do anything with these beautiful books anymore and I think there is definitely nobody, who wants to read them.


Also lange Rede, kurzer Sinn. Ich dachte ich versuche es einfach mal. Ich habe bei einem alten Buch die Buchseiten entfernt und neue, leere Seiten von Hand mit Buchbinderzwirn eingebunden.

So, long story short. I thought I just try it. I have removed the pages of an old book  and inserted new, blank pages by hand with bookbinding thread. 

Ich hoffe, dass es einen Buchliebhaber oder Notizenmacher mit Sinn für etwas Besonderes findet, der sich demnächst an ihm erfreuen kann.

I hope it finds a booklover or notemaker with a sense for something special, who can enjoy it soon.

Ich fand es bei einem alten Buch nicht passend, ein Gummi zum Verschließen direkt am Buch anzubringen. Ich habe mich deshalb für ein loses Gummi entschieden, das man um das Buch machen kann, damit es zu bleibt.


I thought it was not appropriate for an old book, to install an elastic closure right at the book. I have therefore decided to use a loose rubberband, that you can take to keep the book closed.

Einfach weiße Seiten zu nehmen fand ich etwas langweilig, daher habe ich verschiedenes Papier benutzt und auch ein paar der ursprünglichen Buchseiten mußten natürlich mit rein.

I found it a bit boring, to just use white pages, so I've used various paper and of course also a few of the original bookpages.

Ich bin von dem Ergebnis total begeistert und freue mich, dass dieses Buch nun noch einmal als Notizbuch, Tagebuch, oder was auch immer, genutzt werden kann.

I am absolutely delighted with the result and I am pleased, that this book can be used again as a notebook, diary, or what so ever.

Eine schöne Verpackung für das Buch habe ich mir auch schon einfallen lassen.

Even a nice wrapping for this book occured to me.

Es war eine Menge Arbeit, aber ich finde, dass es sich wirklich gelohnt hat. Allerdings hat diese Sache enormes Suchtpotential für mich. Ich glaube, ich werde nun auf dem nächsten Flohmarkt die alten Bücher mit anderen Augen betrachten und bestimmt das eine oder andere mit nach Hause bringen.

It was a lot of work, but I think that it was really worth it. However, this subject has enormous potential for addiction for me. I think at the next flea market, I will now see the old books with different eyes and I'm sure, that I will bring the one or another home with me.
